Type of Action for Bardic Music

OK, so the SRD states

Some bardic music abilities require concentration

Which would seem to imply that some bardic music does not require concentration.

Does this mean that A) any bardic music effect that does not state "requires concentration" or "lasts as long as the bard concentrates" does not take a standard action to maintain, and B)if so, what kind of action is it to maintain a bardic music effect that does not require concentration?

It's no action at all. It costs nothing to maintain it once it has started. There are, of course, caveats. But as long as none of them come up, it costs nothing.

Requires concentration can be read as shorthand for "this ability is disruptable if the character takes damage, falls from the stage, or is properly Heckled"

If you want to be mean, add ",or takes any action beyond normal movement" to that list.

Then have the Bard attempt Concentration checks, DC's starting around 10, in order to maintain the effect in the face of such stuff.



If you don't need to concentrate on maintaining it, no need to worry about actions.
