Well, one of the changes to the "type" rules was blown in "Ecology of the Fire Archon." Now, all creatures that are extensively allied with a particular element are considered to be "elementals."

So, for example, Archons, Efreet, Djinn and Salamanders will all be "elementals."
Hmmm! We also know that giants will be much more closely tied to their element, with huge giants apparently having very close ties.

Perhaps the "types" won't be exclusive anymore. A creature can be both a "giant" and an "elemental" without one of those types being relegated to a subtype.

Well, the Spined Devil id:
Medium Immortal Humanoid (Devil)

If we assume that both Immortal and Humanoid is a kind of type, that could work: but we definitely still have a subtype of Devil, too. If you're right, perhaps the Fire Archon is Medium Immortal Elemental (Archon)? Of course, that's assuming that Immortal means just that, and that Archons are actually immortal. And that Humanoid is a shape-type: the new Archon has a legless form (of course, it's debatable whether all existing elementals have the same legless but not armless body shape).
