D&D 5E Tyranny of Dragons: The New Edition?

Given the widespread hate of metaplot among a sizable contingent of gamers, I would say no.

I certainly hope not, and it would absolutely alienate me if 5e was tied to a specific adventure. The whole idea is to let us all run the game we want to; your idea of "D&D:ToD" is a slap in the face to that notion.

Wizards has recently said that there will only be one Player's Handbook, one Dungeon Master's Guide, and one Monster Manual for this edition. So I think the answer is a pretty clear "no."

Minor correction: According to the comments made at GAMA, which I think is what you're referring to here, WotC only said that there would not be multiple Player's Handbooks. They also said all the "iconic" creatures would be in the Monster Manual, but I don't think they ruled out additional MMs altogether. Here's the relevant quote:

ENWorld's news article on GAMA said:
And as for the main rulebooks -- yes, there will be a Player's Handbook, Monster Manual, and a Dungeon Master's Guide. The covers were shown (they didn't permit photos though). The PHB has a beholder on the front, the MM has a fire giant, and the DMG has drow and an underdark battle. There will NOT be multiple Player's Handbooks, and all the iconic monsters will be in the MM.

I would imagine this is because any additional player options (new races, classes, backgrounds) would probably appear in specific campaign resources, rather than a generic PHII. Likewise, additional monsters might appear in stuff like a "Forgotten Realms Monster Guide" or "Dragonlance Monster Guide" or whatever.

The generic PH and MM handles the iconic stuff... the specific campaigns include the additional stuff. This way players don't need to get confused with what is necessary for the base game.

My first thought is that Tyranny of Dragons will probably follow the pattern of mid-to-late 4e (Dark Sun, Neverwinter, Underdark). Remember those? A season of Organized Play, a player supplement, a DM supplement, and sometimes a monster supplement. It also seems like they're trying to ape the multiplatform success of Rise of the Runelords, what with the toys and the board games.

I doubt any of it will touch the core (or the FRCS for that matter), except maybe the adventure in the starter set.

Which does fit one of my options. Tyranny of Dragons being equal parts splatbook and event, with an Encounter season or two tied to it, likely through published adventures.
