U.S. "Holiday" Days?

My company works directly for a General Motors Assembly plant (so we are down when they are, if not necesarily paid for the Holiday). GM takes off for:
New Years Day
MLK Day
Good Friday & the Monday following Easter
Memorial Day
Labor Day
Veterans Day
Thanksgiving and the day after
Christmas and Independance days are paid Holidays. But GM always shuts down production for a the last week of the year and the first and sometimes second week in July for plant maintenance/upgrades.

Total shot in the dark here, but does the name Mark Nylund ring a bell? (Brother of my first DM; he's worked there for many years, I believe in the electrical department.)

Yep... I know him. He still works here in the Cryogenics Dept.

This is a question for the Americans on the board: What days in the year do most Americans get the day off (or, alternately, do kids get the day off school)? For example, do the rough 'majority' of Americans get President's Day (Feb) off? How about Columbus Day (Oct)? Memorial Day (May)?

Further, is U.S. Thanksgiving a 4-day weekend? If so, is it always a 4-day weekend? Also, how about Independence Day?

Thanks in advance for the info!
By "most Americans," do you mean government workers and financial institution employees? Yes to all of the above.

I work for Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. Our schedule is:

New Year's Day (or the first Monday after, if it falls on a weekend)
Martin Luther King Day
Memorial Day
Independence Day
Thanksgiving Day and the day after
The week from Christmas to New Year's Day

There is some rumbling in the New Jersey legislature about taking away the day after Thanksgiving as a paid holiday for state employees.

Working in the private sector, my company only recognizes six holidays:

New Year's Day
Memorial Day
Independence Day
Labor Day
Thankgiving Day
Christmas Day

..and no, we don't get 4-day weekends on Thanksgiving Day. We have to work that following Friday.

LOL! What a small world I live in... :)

If you see him, you can tell him that Mike, from his brother's old D&D group in Green Bay, says "hi". (He once played a svirfneblin with us...) :D

Is this TRIVIA? and what is the prize?

Or, are you doing a feasibility study on forums intelligence?

I give this forum five stars because they are an intelligent group and have good mind management.

Holidays? Basically whenever the boss says you get one. I work in a small business with one other guy and the owner.

He pays us for Christmas (in the spirit of the season), the other guy and I have had to haggle over the other holidays.

I haven't had a vacation (defined as paid time off for over two days, not counting illness) in 3 years.
