UA: Domain Wizards

Please don't compare the domain wizard with the specialist wizard. My issue is the comparison between the standard generalized wizard and the domain wizard.

The chapter about the domain wizard is not mentioning, if the domain wizard replaces the specialist or the generalist. So i assume, that the option "domain wizard" is intented to be used in conjunction with specialists and generalists.

Well, what i see: the domain wizard is like a generalized wizard, BUT with some extra goodies and no drawback.

Thus: the domain wizard is better than the generalised wizard.

I tried to list his benefits and drawbacks - I then said it looked like the domain wizard came out ahead.

The only real mention I made of specialist wizard was that it looked like they were basing it on some specialist wizard assumptions.

Bottom line domain wizard can cast 1 extra spell/spell level per day (and this spell is dictated by the domain). The domain wizard also freely learns that spell when he progresses (not that big an advantage for a wizard though). The domain wizard also casts those 10 spells at +1 caster level.

Essentially you are correct this class variant does gain things without losing anything. without spcifically stating so this is essentially a replacement for a specialist wizard though. Since it must be taken at first level, cannot be changed and once prohibits a wizard from being both a specialist and domain wzard. So really comparing it to a specialist wizard is a good comparison and begs to use the comparison of a specialist wizard to a generalist wizard.

I believe Patryn of Elvenshae is correct.

The Domain Wizard is, indeed, clearly better than the non-specialist Wizard.

The key is in the general heading for the whole chapter on the class variants. It mentions that it is up to the DM, on a case by case basis, to decide whether a variant is used WITH or INSTEAD OF the normal version of the class, if it is used AT ALL.

I *think* the Domain Wizard is for those DMs who feel that the Cleric gets to steal some of the Wizard's thunder.

What part of "cannot be a specialist wizard" isn't making sense as a drawback?

Gee, maybe the same part that everyone else doesn't see. But perhaps if you are condescending to them also they might see the light.
