UA, What variants are you using?

I like the bloodlines concept, so I might modify it so that it works in my game.

I like some of the varient spell casters and power items for powering up metamagic feats. I'll probably try add some of that into the game.

variants good

I bought Conan the RPG recently. I love it, glaring errors acknowledged and held to the side. Here're the variants I think sound cool:

• Action Points (gimmicky player-induced impacts can be fun)
• VP/WP instead of HP (wounds will be significant, lifelong baggage)
• 3d6 instead of d20 (makes ranks in skills much more valuable)
• roll for DV (I want more uncertainity in combat)
• Flaws, Traits, and such (cool ways to differentiate characters)

I'm also going to restructure the skill system. I prefer meta-groupings (Spot and Listen would fall under Perception, Move Silent and Hide would fall under Stealth, etc.). I also think there should be more and better synergies provide by skills (5 ranks of Focus? Get +2 on this Perception check to hear what's happening on the other side of that door).

A lot of the things in UA can be really unbalancing (item familiars, anyone?) so we're starting slow, incorporating things in other d20 games that we've liked and that we know work into our D&D game. We're using:

  • VP/WP
  • Class defense bonus
  • Armor as DR
  • action points

Eventually, I'd like to add in gestalt characters (I currently only have two players and this'll help), honor, taint, and spell points.

i have used the player roll all dice variant for the last three years in my campaign. It was well liked by everyone in my game.

BTW, WOTC got the math wrong... instead of +11 its +12.

My game thats starting will only feature random massive damage (if fort save fails, dropped to -1 through -10 randomly), racial paragons, a few class variants (specialist wizards and whirling frenzy) and possilby action points (need to discuss with players)

My other idea for a game is a very story-driven game, so it will feature
Generic classes, V/WP, Def Bonus, Armor as DR, Taint (replace align), weapon groups, arctic racial variants, and some modified spell lists. Its almost not D&D, but a d20 game at that point (!)

Armour as DR and WP/VP, to make the combat in my Planescape game different, perhaps a bit more cinematic and a great deal more lethal.

[*]Paladin variants (paladin of honor/freedom/slaughter/tyranny). The paladin of honor will just be a paladin; paladins of freedom are Avengers; paladins of slaughter are Ravagers; & paladins of tyranny are blackguards (no blackguard PrC, BTW).

I like the names you have come up with for the "paladin" variants. I make it a point to come up with campaign specific names for classes and PrCs as well.
