Ubuntu and Wireless

To avoid completely threadjacking the other thread about Windows, I'll split this off to a new thread.

I usually run Windows XP, but not really because I like it, I've had enough problems that I'd rather like to go to another OS. A while back around Christmas I decided to try Ubuntu in a dual-boot setup just to test things out. The problem was I use a Wireless network and Ubuntu wouldn't detect my Linksys wireless card. I hooked directly to the router and found out about NDIS wrapper but even after loading it and running through the steps I still couldn't get it too work.

So knowing there are several skilled Linux users here, and one who's gotten a Linksys card working, how did you do it? I'm running a Linksys 54G card with Speedbooster running driver version 3.50.21.11

Here is a thread from the Ubuntu Forums:

This post looked promising, though you might want to read the full thread to see if anyone else offers a few hints.

Ubuntu Forums said:
install ndiswrapper from synaptic package manager.

then download ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/network/wp...ility_v2.0.zip

unzip the downloaded zipfile, find the correct .inf (lsbcmnds.inf in my case) file and run
sudo ndiswrapper -i lsbcmnds.inf

load the module and make it reload on reboot:
modprobe ndiswrapper
echo ndiswrapper >> /etc/modules

in gnome, goto networking and put your settings.

DL'ed your link and burned the ISO.

This is odd, I've loaded 6.06 and 6.10 with no problem before. Once loaded GRUB prevented Windows from working but Ubuntu ran fine, I just couldn't get the wireless network up. Trying to install 7.04 if I use the guided partitioning and install Ubiquity crashes and the install hangs up, just sits there spinning wheels.

I get farther if I I try manual install but I've got options I'm not familiar with so a few questions. I know ext3 is for the primary partition but what should I mount it as? Is that equivalent to the volume label in Windows? and what partition type should root be since it doesn't have any options that say root?

UPDATE: I've managed to get Ubuntu 7.04 to install properly I just had to bypass the data migration assistant. Windows still works(I kept the windows and Linux on separate HDs). Wireless works in Windows. Next will test in Ubuntu 7.04

Unfortunately, I'm not an Ubuntu user. I'm glad you figured it out, but remember it's still in beta - some things are not going to work quite right.

Beta or not it seems to be working better than previous iterations of Ubuntu. With every previous version I couldn't even get them to see my wireless card. This one saw and recognized it straight off the bat. I'm still trying to get it to connect to the network though, either way it's working better than anything before and I'll probably stick with it as a dual boot since GRUB hasn't hosed Windows this time.
