UDON Street Fighter comics

Desdichado

Legend
I did a search, but I didn't find that anyone had discussed this, which surprised me a bit. I was taking my kids to "Free Comic Book Day" earlier, and the comic book shop also had all graphic novels and trade paperbacks for 25% off. I asked about this, and it looks like just in time (like last week) they finished packing up the first 14 episodes into two TPBs. A quick online search seems to show that there only are 14 issues so far, so I guess I'm caught up?

The TPBs don't include the "extra" short stories that are part of the mags, but do include the issue #0 prologue, and have all the main, continuous story going on. The story itself, by the way, is extremely well written. It keeps to the essence of the characters, makes them a lot more interesting than simply a set of moves and a look (of course to longtime and fanatic players like me, they always were more than that anyway). It seems to be weaving several strands of storyline (several characters in SFA1/2, SFA3 and SF2 storylines) all together. The compression is good, IMO.

I really like the relationship between Sakura and Ryu too. Oddly enough, many (let me reiterate the many) years ago, I wrote a story about a bunch of SF characters, and I had much the same vibe, so clearly it felt right to me on reading it here.

The art is also pretty cool. It should be anime-like, given the nature of the source material, but it's not so anime as to annoy me. In fact, I think they did a pretty good job of getting the right balance between anime and American comic book art styles.

And it has special covers done by Shinkiro -- how cool is that?

I got a copy of the #0 issue a few years back from afriend that works for UDON. I don't follow the comic but from what I have read it does look really good.

My roommate has a couple of issues, and it surprised me with how good-looking and compelling a read it was - even though I generally hate fighting games on principle. As a notorious miser I haven't pursued the avenue any further, but I certainly wouldn't turn down an opportunity to read more.

Yeah, the SF comics are pretty sweet. All I need for fighter's nirvana is a series of Guilty Gear ones, drawn by UDON or Daisuke Ishiwatari himself.

Eh, I'd rather have Fatal Fury or King of Fighters.

Which I heard some rumor from someone that it might be in development by the same team. Probably just wishful thinking on the part of whomever posted that rumor, though.
