UGT and the Gleemax Advisory Board...

Lucky you. I had 15 minutes to answer 30 questions... Given what's been said here and above, without getting into specifics, it seems the questions others had and what I had were quite similar...they can't be *that* random. That said, there were a few games mentioned I'd never heard of (e.g. Titan) never mind played...

One of us needs to design the alternate UGT: the Ultimate Grognard Test. :)

Oops, you were correct. I knew it was 15 and 30 of something. ;) I had 7 minutes left when I hit the submit button, I know that for sure.

From what I've seen, it looks like the questions may not have been random at all, or if they were it was a limited set. I took the test just to see what it was like, not with any aspirations to do well. Good thing, because I'm sure I didn't do well.

Is there a reason we can't discuss the test specifics now? It is closed, so I don't see why we can't.

I had questions about board game awards, war games, MtG, BattleTech, Titan, and pinochle. Several questions were game history related - "Which company has been publishing games the longest?" What struck me as odd was that I had very few RPG questions.

I'm not convinced this test was a very good screen for the next stage, but I guess we'll have to wait and see what comes of it.

Man, that was a mean test.

I suspect that if they're wanting Gleemax to be the Ultimate Gamer site, then it has to include *all* games, not just RPGs and whatnot. And so, it'd make sense to have your random person know as much about all genres of gaming as possible.

But, sheesh, that was hard.

Yeah, I had the picture from the start that they wanted an all-around gamer. Their perfect person probably plays games of all sorts day and night. I certainly wasn't able to answer more than a handful of questions without guessing, but I expected that.

Heh, I was just looking at the official rules for this contest. I really like this one for the final winner (emphasis mine):

9. Announcement of the Winner(s): Wizards will announce the Winner(s) (if one) on or about August 20, 2007 on www.gleemax.com.
So, after interviewing the final candidates, WotC is reserving the right to say, "Umm, we liked your stuff, but now that we've actually met you all..."

Good.

Some people don't work well on a team and make wonderful freelancers or terrific solo developers/writers. Remember, Thornir, not everyone has natural charm and washboard abs like you and I! Allowances must be made and precautions must be taken!

OK, this is just a rant, but is it too late to change the name of this new website to something other than Gleemax? Almost anything else would be better.

Nice list of advisors, by the way!

Ken

What about Meepo? That'd be the best name for what this is supposed to be all about.

On the Gleemax boards they do confirm that the questions were drawn from a larger pool. Now on to my opinion. The problem it seemed to me was that all the questions were randomly selected from which resulted is inadvertant weighting. They said that for example MtG questions made up no more than 10% of all the questions. Unfortunately for me my sample pulled about 6-7 MtG questions which comes out to 20% of 30 questions. The test should have been broken into sections with each section pulling from its own question pool so that no type of game was favored over others by the question pull. Again I am not sure if it was my pull or the questions asked but over 50% was on WotC or AH products. I know WotC is the big player but for a test for all gamers it should have been less biased towards one company.

Doesn't Hasbro own Avalon Hill anyway?

I was expecting it to be mainly focused on RPG's, but fortunately I was around early enough in M:tG to know (most of) those answers, and have played Diplomacy and Settlers of Catan just enough to (almost) get those. Also, as I still play mostly 1e D+D those were pretty much a piece o' cake; I can reach my DMG from where I'm sitting now. :) But who published what game when...haven't got a clue. :)

Anything at all to do with video or computer games doomed me unless my guessing skills were runnething over...

Are they going to post the answers?
