I'll see if I can get my hands on some Ultimate comics too how the characters have turned up (so far I've only read Spidey, and a few of X-men). But most likely I'll end up choosing Spidey since he's been my favourite for a long while.

And Thane, like it says in the first post

for me...
Ultimate Spiderman is the best in my humble opinion.
the Ultimates is a close second (if not first).
the New Ultimate Fantastic Four has just begun but it's looking good.
then the other titles like Ultimate War and Ultimate Team-up.
Ultimate X-men has been my least favorite, but it's still "ultimately" more readable than the current original books IMHO.

as I've said though - the Ultimate characters have the same iconic style/themes of the originals but otherwise they're "reimagined" to be a little more modern fun.
I'm okay with everyone taking their shot at that type character as long as they have a good take on the originals. Reading the Ultimate comics is fun but not super necessary for our "what if".

Oh, I foolishly assumed there was a bit more to it. :)

So it's basically just some sort of big superhuman royal rumble? :p

Well, there is Galactus, who is there to represent neutrality. Lots of things happen, people changing sides and what not.

And in the end, nobody remembers any of it. :)

the Secret Wars WAS the set-up for a battle royal... but the coolest bits are the interactions of the characters, the moral stances taken and the outcomes of changes to some characters.
the biggest example is Spiderman's black suit that would eventually become Venom originally came from the Secret Wars 12 issue mini-series.

I know that PBeM battles are slower, so I expect ALOT of that fun roleplaying to be had then quick exciting battles...

there were LOTS of motivations running about for all the characters. The series cemented Captain America's leadership and respect from ALL the Marvel heroes, it showed the mutant distrust of the X-men extremely well... The villains weren't always on the same tactical side. and Galactus was feared by all.
There was also the planet itself that offered different peoples and areas of planets, since the Beyonder actually took pieces of planets from across the Universe to form BattlePlanet. there was even a small chunk of Denver.

I would plan to use all this and even add things not in the series for the update.

hope that helps

Id be very interested, Ill definitly take Daredevil.

So interested in this.
I would have to go through my ultimate books again to pick a character but it is sure I will tend to an X-Men, simply because that is the only series i regularly read.
On a first thought I consider Rogue because I think it's real fun that she finally has to use her absorbtion powers for one instead of being a flying powerhouse like in the original series.

I would be so interested in this!!

Ultimate Wolverine would be a choice of mine, if I was given a choice.

Keia

I am definately interested.

as I said this will be my first attempt at running a PBeM, I'm very familiar with running table top games so it shouldn't be that problematic...
but my thought for Players chooseing characters would come down to HOW WELL I thought they could roleplay with the style of the character. Having a bloodthirsty Spiderman or a snivelling Captain America or a Punisher-like Wolverine (even Wolverine has a code to his madness) would be very unfun for me GMing....

One thought would be to have the player wishing to play a character write a 2-3 sentence paragraph on how you plan to play the character to help me decide "who gets Wolverine" or any other dispute beyond first come / first served.

is that too pretentious?

and last thought - do you think the 25 characters will be TOO crazy much? One of the things with the Secret Wars was the fact of dealing with so many different personalitities and how they relate to one another... BUT I don't want to lose anyone on not giving enough "airtime".
thoughts??

otherwise
it seems like enough people are getting interested,
character and game details coming soon...
thanks

going to mail you a few sentences then. I think that's a pretty good idea anyway, I even go so far as to chek a few ingame posts of applying players (if they allready have some) then picking them.
I was thinking about Magneto for a while but it is hard to say what's his personality in the ultimate series is. It's defifinatly a lot worse than in the normal Marvel Universe but there's just not enough to go with.

One last thought from me: I think it's a great idea to have as many characters as possible in the secret wars but frankly I think twenty five is just impossible to handle for any lone gm.
I tried 9 once and even that was more than a little difficult.
