Ultimate self-sufficiant char.

Just play what you want. A sorc or beguiler can solve problems involving their weaknesses by charming or hiring people. A cleric can hold his own, heal himself, and be specifically built for respectable stealth. An artificer can build something (or scribe a scroll) that solves any given problem.

I'd actually suggest that the pure melee types are the worst, because you have no margin for error.

Frankly, I don't have the slightest idea as to what kind of sidekick to have (if at all) but I was thinking of playing something to the effect of a ranger with no more than 3 levels each of scout monk rouge bard barbarian and paladin  . Also the DM will be somewhat inexperienced so all that may be too hard for him to calc. the much lower CR for me if I had all that.(not to mention align. restrictions.( I was thinking of being NG.)) I was thinking of starting at lvl. 2 but am still unsure.

Druid, Bard, VoP Monk are all pretty good choices. For a solo game, Druid + strong melee animal companion is probably the best. Personally, in both second and third editions, I found a dwarf fighter 1-2 / cleric x to be the best for sheer survivability.

Also, you may consider to play gestalt (essentially two characters in one).

When the wife GMed me solo we used that. It worked nicely. More versatility but not that much more power - always a good thing for solo characters.

I will take all of this into consideration but first let me elaborate on the origional Q. I am not really into playing magic users so I',m liking the idea of a wood elf swift hunter with MAYBE :\ a lvl. or two of rogue, bard, or monk. if I go with bard I won't get lock and trap skills, if I go with monk then I won't be able to fully utilize the unarmed/unarmored bonuses (I like my chainmail and sword okay!). If I go with any of them then I'll get XP drawbacks. I need to be stealthy,strong,diplomatic,..um,disable trapy? and lockpicky :) all at the same time. Also I don't really like the chameleon ethier. If I remeber rightly they belong to a somewhat larcenous guild of evildoers. So taking all of this into consideration, my Q is: Am I entitled to any xtra class skills or points?

Bard/Druid heading for Fochlucan Lyrist. You have the bards versatility and you can reach druid level 9 spells with a pretty good BAB.

Agreed.

This PrC has the highest entry requirements of any I've ever seen (you'll probably need a level or two of rogue in addition to the bard and druid levels), but has all the goods when you get there. Full BAB, 3 good saves (maybe just 2, I can't remember now), and full progression of arcane and divine spell casting. The class also has some good flavor that supports the go anywhere do anything approach you are talking about.

You'll absolutely need two levels of rogue, unless you can figure out some other way to pick up Evasion.

With the right mix of powers, I think a Psion could be a pretty self-sufficient character, too.

Druid or thrallherd. Perhaps a necromancer of some sort.

Either way, a class that gives you disposable minions to protect you is a good idea.
