Optimizing

There is out of play optimizing - and let's admit that monks need help - and in play optimizing.

Taking classes and feats to improve your effectiveness is done on your own time & actually allows you to enjoy D&D while not playing. You can research & contemplate your choices.

Taking up game time with a calculator figuring out whether against AC 28 with a +14 attack, you are better Power Attacking for 2 or 3 just takes me right out of the moment.

I am not saying either thing is "bad" or "good" in general. I am just saying that, for me, this is what maximizes my enjoyment of the game.

I hate Power Attack / Leap Attack b/c they kill the RP flavor for me - too much optimizing number crunching, not enough bone crunching. Too each their own...

That's funny. I think Battle Jump is poorly thought out and poorly written and so uber cheesy I don't even mention it in thread anymore, and I think pounce is the A++ uber must have ability of melee. But you recommend a build with those two things and then say leap attack is too much optimizing? I always thought Leap Attack was pretty tame... And it's chock full of flavor! You wouldn't believe how many times there's been difficult terrain or a grapple or an ally that's on the floor having a seizure from too much acid or something else and my character was like, "I can totally leap over that hot mess as part of my charge!"

I wonder if when you use an unarmed strike with Battle Jump or Leap Attack to stomp on an enemy's head, if you get a coin or perhaps a bunch of meaningless points?

Sword and Fist from 3.0 was a treasure trove for this. Sandals of Tiger Leaping alone will help you lots. Doubled damage on an unarmed charge iirc.

But I wonder about this, doesn't it basically grant the 3.0 feat equivalent of flying kick, and would that stack?

Well, I don't remember exactly what they do, just that I valued them on my 3.0 flying kick monk enough to pay extra for them along with the mandatory boots of striding and springing that fill the same body slot.

If it's an issue of multipliers, you'd use D&D math. Doubling your damage twice means it'd be x3 damage.

I guess my idea of RP:

"I leap high in the air and crash violently into the baddie using every part of my body in a vicious assault"

is different from your idea of RP:

"I have a 78% to hit probability for an average of 9.6 points of damage or an average of 7.5 points, but if I power attack for 3 that would increase my average to (wait, I'm calculating...) 7.8 points. So, I Power Attack for 2. My turn is done."
