Are creatures automatically proficient with Unarmed Strike, or does it take Simple Weapon Proficiency: Unarmed Strike? For example, is a human (or elven or gnome) wizard automatically proficient with unarmed strike?

There is no proficiency requirement for an unarmed strike. So, yes you could immediately take Weapon Focus-Unarmed Strike. An unarmed strike is a natural weapon, similar to the claws, bite, or tail of some sort of monster.

Also, taking Simple Weapon Proficiency gives you proficiency in all simple weapons. Unlike Martial Weapon Proficiency in which you must select a single weapon.
