I've seen no evidence of this. There's plenty of evidence that the current version of Ravenloft is the most popular setting and adventure in D&D's history

Sales maybe. Piggybacking on over 5E success imho (anything 5E related tends to sell well).

I suspect even here very few people are actually playing WotC settings. Long term cultural impact will be minimal.

WotC likes those big initial sales.
 





Comparing the popularity of 5E's Curse of Strahd, which IS classic Ravenloft vs the popularity of the 5E exclusive Domains of Dread and their Darklords proves I'm right.
that feels more like a non-sequitur. How does the popularity of the 5e domains compare to the 2e ones sounds more like a comparison that would make sense.

I don’t think the 2e ones were all that great, the 5e ones would benefit from more content however. VRG only has a few pages for each, a FR style 2-book release would help a lot there
