Undead PC possible?

Dude, PLANESCAPE: THE TORMENT. Go play this game now. Its 3.0 dnd rules I believe. Sounds very similar to the character you want to create, only way more awesome. Would give you some great ideas for your character.

cant believe no one else referenced that

Because this is the 4E forum? Because he already has a concept, and wanted mechanics?

I agree; Revenant is the way to go. For additional flavour you can add in feats from your 'former' race. Tough and might just come back from the dead on his own, after the baddies put him down. Like 1of3 said, very Crow-ish.

A) Planescape Torment is 2nd ed rules, as the Planescape setting was entirely 2nd ed (barring the odd Dragon magazine article)

B) I could mention all sorts of inspirational works that he could look at for playing an undead PC cursed by the gods with immortality. But he was asking how to model the idea in the rules, and Planescape Torment isn't very useful for that. (It is, however, an excellent game, very worth playing.)

C) It occurs to me that "cursed by the gods with immortality" is a good background for a Deva. They may not seem terribly undead-ish at first glance, but their mechanics actually work decently: Necrotic resistance and Memory of a Thousand Lifetimes certainly fit the concept.
