Unearthed Arcana Sage Advice re: Paladins

So, in the AD&D1e campaign I'm playing in there are both a Paladin and a Cavalier. Somehow through reading the Unearthed Arcana section on Paladins and Cavaliers, the impression in the group (although not share by myself) is that while Cavaliers get to increase their physical stats at every level, Paladins get to do so for the same stats as well as their Charisma.

I read it as the Paladin gets to do this for his Charisma and not his other stats.

Not having the time or energy to dig through all my old Dragon Magazines for Sage Advice, I was wondering what the overall impression of this is?

(I'm playing neither the Paladin nor the Cavalier - I'm the Ranger. We seem to be a bit fighter-heavy).

My impression is that they get it for all the same stats as the Cavalier, plus Charisma. The paladin is stated as having abilities that are additive to the Cavalier.
