Unreal II: The Awakening - Special Edition

Goodsport

Explorer
Unreal II: The Awakening - Special Edition will be hitting stores later this week. It will include the single-player version released earlier this year plus the new Expanded Multiplayer (XMP).

For those of us who already have the single-player version, the XMP will be available as a free download starting on Tuesday (12/9/03). :D

I've already played the demo of XMP several times, and it's fun! :) You don't need the single-player version installed to play the demo, but you do need it to play the full-version of XMP... so either buy the single-version of Unreal II while it's still in stores and download the XMP for free, or buy the Special Edition.

How is the single-version aspect of the game? I never played the original one, I just played the Tournament variant. Would you think it's as good as something like Half-Life or System Shock?

Based on every review I've even glanced at the answer is a big fat NO.

Do a search at Game Rankings if you want to read more on it yourself.

Unfortunately, I've never played Half-Life or System Shock (so I would know how it compares to those two), but the single-player aspect of Unreal II is very good. The graphics are great, the missions are fun and the bickering between the ship crew is pretty funny. :D

The only real complaint I've heard (besides the one from fans of the first game, which I just recently found and started playing as well, is that Unreal II isn't Unreal... a complaint I generally dismiss since I usually judge a sequel on its own merits rather than whether or not it's exactly like its predecessor) is that it's too short - I wouldn't know whether or not this is a valid complaint, though, as I'm only in the middle of the single-player campaign.

Not only is the single-player game fun, but it also expands the scope of the Unreal universe (as the first game only took place on a single planet against a single enemy alien race) by introducing more background history, new planets, new aliens, new corporations (friendly and hostile), new weapons, etc.

Additionally, XMP is a heck of a lot of fun too! :)
