Untouchable NPCs

Tinker Gnome

Are there any NPCs in your game that you just dont kill? An NPC that by an unspoken rule is not killed? For instance, in my group there is a Gnome NPC that follows the party around, he does not fight or anything, his main job is writing down the party's adventures in his really big book. He speaks in a squeaky high picthed voice, and he does every once in a while help the party out with some alchemical problems, but he does not participate in combat, he usually is just off to the side of the battle.

In one game a Barbarian brings her dog- an ordinary, 6 HP dog- along on harrowing mid-level adventures. It sniffs out ambushes, bites bad people and generally makes itself a target, but that dog has never been hurt. I did manage to convince her not to bring it into a cave with a young adult red dragon, but who's to say if it wouldn't have survived anyway?

I try to avoid creating "untouchables."

There are definitely some NPCs who get more attention than others and some that I enjoy roleplaying as much as a player character, but in general I prefer to let the dice fall where they may when it comes to determining fate.

I have an NPC in one of the Modern games I'm GMing that I know will eventually be arrested and lose his job - it bums me out, but it would be too contrived for me to change this outcome since it is the logical consequence of what will happen in the course of events.

In our ongoing Mystara campaign we came across this intelligent parrot...umm...something like two years ago (real time). He comes and goes and often follows the party on adventures, and so far has remained unscathed. Annoying little wisecracker, but we love 'im. Probably gets eaten by a dragon at some point. :)

I never fully intend for anything to be untouchible but therea rea NPCs that have fit the bill just becasue they got lucky and hide when trouble came around. I do though have a habit of letting familars and animal companions live a biut longer then other people seem to, I never understood the need to always kill these creatures.

I view no one as untouchable in my games. Of course with that said that doesn't mean NPC's aren't smart about where to put skill points, feats and spells or magic items that may help them stay alive in sticky situations. But if the dice go against them, they go against them.

I can't say that anyone is really untouchable in my games but there are those I will actively be more lenient towards. Familiars and animal companions are the most obvious ones, but I'm also usually a little softer on rescued NPC prisoners. Though the latter tends to be more level-dependent though, prisoners make for great collateral in higher level gaming.

Cheers!

Keith the Invulnerable Donkey. He carried mundane gear where the horses wouldn't go, but refused to carry treasure. He was immune to everything, provided zero cover, and did not set off traps.

Cheers
Nell.
