Unusual Mounts :: Fiendish Displacer Beast

FCWesel

First Post
I gave a villainous group of baddies fiendsih war-horses, thematically resembling the ring-wraiths and thier dark horses, but for a time I had considered giving them Fiendish Displacer Beasts as a mount.

But the more I thought of it, the odder that sounded...also the image of the guy riding two feet to the left of the beast kind of rang odd with me...

Thoughts...?

I sense a fellow stereotype buster... And I perceive an excellent idea.

I like the idea as is. An enhancement might be to give the rider a cloak of displacement, making him appear on top of the beast? Perhaps 'Armor: Hide of Displacer Beast' as a unique to do the same. Improved invisibility, if that's a possibility in your scenario, would just be outright hilarious. "Why is the displace beast doing LANCE damage to me??" or "Why is the displacer beast shooting ARROWS at me??"

I once had a fiendish lizardman villain who domesticated owlbears and placed himself and his two cohorts on their shoulders. Turned an otherwise mediocre low ECL villain into a specialized hit/run bandit - specially after players destroyed his village and he started raiding caravans :).

I'd certainly rule that a rider would appear to be one the displacer beast's back and not off to the side.

Are displacer beasts gone from 3.5? I could not find them in the SRD, though they are in the 3.0 MM for sure.

They are still in the 3.5 MM. I think that they are just "protected" monsters now like Beholder, Mind Flayers, and the Yuan-Ti so they do not appear in the SRD
