[UPDATE DEC 14 - FINAL VERSION]

I've seen a couple of attempts to use video for online marketing for RPGS. WotC has it's animated funny shorts, Paizo had a preview of Pathfinder with Erik Mona flicking through the book, and I've seen a couple of others. Are there any others that folks are aware of?

We're producing one for War of the Burning Sky. It's not finished yet (as evidenced by having the A-Team in the credits at the end), but here's what we have so far:

I'm planning on commissioning one for SPACE FIGHT!, too.

Would you be more likely to watch a trailer than read a web page of information? And do you think a trailer can help convey anything about a product that a static web page cannot?

(For those interested, the above trailer is being produced by RMW Films - and they're more than willing to take on commission work!)

Maybe is not common, but when I see a trailer for this kind of product, I think myself "the creator is really confident that this is good stuff, because if not he wouldn't have spend the money needed to create a trailer". So I'm more interested in giving the product a try (or at least I have more curiosity about it).

Regards,

Interesting! Such a video would coerce me to try to get more information about the product, maybe make an impulse purchase of a small item (single adventure, background or rules material).

Furthermore it projects a positive image of the offering company: they do things differently, in a modern way.

All in all positive, but wouldn't open up my wallet in a major way.

As long as they're short, I'd rather watch a video than read a wall of text. Done well, I'd make the leap to reading a pitch to find out more info. Done poorly, I'd never give the product a second look. If you do go the video route, you have to be sure you're able to market the game as effectively in video as you do with a web page.

Audio does wonders to quickly convey a "feel" that is hard to match with a short block of text. For example, I turned down the volume on your video and played "Entry of the Gladiators" in the background as I watched it again. I certainly didn't get the same "epic campaign" feeling (though it was amusing at how it kinda synced up). But the original score works perfectly to impress a sense of scale and weight upon the campaign.

If I hadn't already bought the product, that video would definitely not make me buy it. In general, videos are cute as appetizers and might spark enough interest to search for more info about the product. But I think its great that you are trying new things, maybe it will work well on others.
