I'm not sure what they mean when they say its NON-d20 but its based on the OGL. I checked out the Dragonsfoot forums but, even though I played the heck out of 1e back in the day, I can't seem to understand even 25% of what they are talking about. It seems that they played a different game than I did.

I do, however, think D&D desperately needs a new version of the Basic rules.

There's a couple of licensing issues that are normally lumped together, but are actually separate. At the most basic level, a d20 product gets to use the d20 logo; a product that's OGL but not d20 doesn't.

Be interesting to see what they come up with, but looking into D&D's past for a rules-light inspiration doesn't really work for me. The history of D&D within each edition is a story of increasing rules, so for example you'd get a much more rules-light approach by hearkening back to the initial release of 3rd edition than the middle days of 1st edition. I imagine they're looking to a certain "feel" for inspiration rather than anything that's actually from D&D's history.

Why, is the question that springs to mind first? :o
I mean sure there a lot of rules in 3rd(3.0 or 3.5) edition D&D. But Rule 0 combined with common sense and some basic ground rules with you're player's (or DM) can make any game rules-'light'...

I personally don't see the need of having a rules light version of the same game just because some rules are 'cramping you're style' every now and then

Some people just don't get it.

So is it 1E or basic? If it's 1E I'll give it a look, if it's basic I'll pass.
Aaron, the impetus sounds OLDER than Basic, if I understand both the tone, and diaglo's giggling in the background. :D

I must admit, the name they are planning to use hearkens back a long, long way. (Gary created the C&CS before D&D was developed.)

I'll have to go over and read the dragonsfoot reaction. Some will love it, others will gather the pitchforks and the stones, and most will likely shrug and say, "ehh."

As DMScott said; Monte's Arcana Unearthed, for instance, is NOT d20, but it is OGL; he included various things like character advancement that can't be included in the d20 trademark. Troll Lord obviously intends to do the same.
