Upgrading a mount?

Is it possible for a character with sufficient time and ranks in Handle Animal to train up a riding horse to a warhorse? I'm thinking more of a shift stat wise, as opposed to giving a riding mount combat training while keeping riding horse stats.

How would this be done?

Thanks,

Horses of a different color..

No, you cannot train a Riding Horse and turn it into a War Horse. They are different breeds. Riding horses are more the Arabian/Quarterhorse type and Warhorses are more the Morgan/Draft style.

You can train a riding horse to act as a warhorse in battle, but it will still have the stats of a riding horse.

ALtho, you could take Leadership, make your mount a Cohort and advance its HD in accordance with the MM entry... expensive, but thats about all you can do.

Why do you want to do this? The only think I can think of is that your PC bought a riding horse at 1st-level when he didn't have money for a warhorse, but for RP purposes wants to keep the same animal, even though he can afford a warhorse now.

In any case, I would not allow Handle Animal to do such a thing. They are, as pointed out, different breeds of horse. However, if I as a DM had a player in this situation, I might introduce an animal bolstering potion that could be purchased from a local hedge witch...at about the same price as a light warhorse...that would over the course of a couple weeks bulk up a riding horse and give it warhorse stats.
