40-60% of the "retail" value, depending on the PC's ability to appraise the item and bargain for it (appraise and diplomacy rolls). However, occaisionally, I'll let the roleplay the bargaining scene. When I do, I let the price vary a bit more, probably something akin to 20-80% of retail value, instead.

A also use Appraise to modify the 50% base value. Appraisers roll for items when they are found or identified, and that's the price they'll get when they come to sell it to someone with the right funds.

Straight up exactly 50% makes things move quick. It's not the most realistic system (they never can get 51% no matter who is selling, cha doesn't matter, etc.) but speed is important.

QFT. Can't let realism get in the way of gameplay! ;)

However, there has certainly been occasions where the prizes have varied greatly from that norm, when the players wanted to invest the time and effort needed to get the optimum price for an item. The very first time my group encountered an epic weapon for ex., they had an auction going for a month to get the best possible price for it. (During that month it was stolen from them and they had to go a sidequest to steal it back! :p )

In another campaign, two PCs started their own "magic item" shop. They earned themselves some extra gp, although I don't think they made enough of a profit to cover the cost of all the magical protections they bought for their store!

As others have said, simply for speed and ease of use we do a straight 50% on all items (other than art objects) with rare occasions when the PCs come across something that has value beyond its apparent worth - such as some MW items that belonged to a historic company of soliders who died in a famous battle, a rare book on herbology by a famous scholar, ancient coins valued for their rare metals or purity, or a portrait of a sitting royal's ancestor. Occasionally PCs will get side commisions that run along the lines of "I heard you were going into the Deep Dark Dungeon. My grandfather spent the family fortune on adventuring gear with the family crest on them and tried to get the treasure for himself. I will pay you +25% of their worth for their return. "

The Big 6 retain 80% of their value, since they are always in demand.

Outside that, 50% value is reasonable and customary.
