Has it to be the IH system? There is another older option for D&D 3.5, the system on which IH and Pathfinder were built:

PS: I used it once in a Swashbuckler game, in conjunction with "armor as DR" from the same book/site. Worked pretty well. If you don't know which row you should apply, it is based on the classes armor proficiency:
A= no, B=light, C=medium, D=heavy
