Using less SA damage

If you have a Rogue with 7d6 SA damage. Can you do less than that?

I know you could skip SA all together, but could I only do 3d6 or something similar?

You might be able to, but why? If it's so you don't kill someone, why not use a sap and subdual sneak attack?

Same here, I would allow it but if you want to subdue someone better use a weapon that deals non-lethal damage, e.g. sap.
