Using Miniatures.

Well, shoot. It seems like most of the miniatures I want are in the harbringer set and cost a fortune ( on cardhaus.com at least). Which sets are still in production?

I think that all the sets that are in productions are Abberations, Deathkneel, and Angelfire. But that is just a guess.

I don't mean to plug myself, but I was in your boat up until a few months ago. I eventually started using counters and then I bought a guys lot of D&D miniatures for what I later found out was a killer deal. When I got them, I was really impressed with how cool they looked and I quickly became addicted. Now I'm trying to collect each complete set :heh:

If you want cheap minis, just buy them from Enworld or maximinis.com people. I have a whole bunch for sale between .40-.80 cents each that might work for you. And I've seen others sell for about the same price. If you buy from online stores, expect to pay a lot more than that for the exact same figures. Look at wizards.com's miniature galary for each set to see pictures of all of the miniatures. If I have anything you're interested in, feel free to email me with any questions. The link to my for sale stuff is in my sig :)

Of course, if you buy from Wizards.com/Enworld/maximinis.com users, make sure that you're dealing with someone that can prove their legitimacy so you don't get scammed.

Only the most recent (Angelfire), and perhaps not even that - they may have switched over to entirely Underdark, the next set, by now.

That doesn't mean that there aren't other boosters of other sets out there - I can find Giants of Legend and onward fairly easily.

It should be noted that core D&D miniatures are redone in future sets - either as resculpts or as new minis, but on the same base creature.

Thus the rare Ogre from Harbinger was later done as a rare Ogre Ravager in Dragoneye, then an uncommon Skullcrusher Ogre in Deathknell.

The rare Troll of Harbinger was done as an uncommon Troll Slasher in Angelfire.

The rare Minotaur of Harbinger was resculted as the rare Minotaur of Giants of Legend, and then as a uncommon Feral Minotaur in Angelfire.

There are orc-types in almost every set. :) And kobolds keep making appearance (to Mat Smith's eternal delight).

Cheers!

Here is an eBay store that has some good deals on lots of minis. It is a quick way to build a collection with some of the staples you might need for using minis.

Heh...I always wanted 25 giant frogs.

I'd use the Ibixians and a couple others, but this dude doesn't ship to Canuck-land. Pretty sweet deals though. Sigh.

I have had about a half dozen very good experiences buying singles from The Card Vault. They have good prices, they only show what they have in stock and their shipping cost is reasonable. Finally, on the one instance I needed to contact customer service, the problem was fixed without questions in less than 24 hours. Most other places fall down in one or more of those areas. I also have no compaints with Popular Collections. My only experience with buying singles from IconUSA was a bad one, and I have a currently pending/unresolved story, leaning towards not recommending, with Chumba Toys.

Auggies (the ebay store linked earlier) has very nice buy it now prices.

You can check maxminis marketplace thread for lots of minis for sale - some at a good price, some not so good.

Counters work well, though, if you don't want to pay a mint.

To echo the rest - buy a bunch of packs and you'll get a bunch of commons and such that are things you'll likely have wanted anyway - like goblins, orcs, bandits, etc.

I bought a bunch of the various sets (not all of them, and only a handful of some of them) and ended up with a good collection of nice, painted minis to use in any game.

I also have my old metal minis, about 100-200, a few dozen of which have been painted by me.

To get specific ones, well, there are metal ones and you can buy singles online, but if you buy enough random packs you'll probably have enough for any game, and of course there are the substitutes you can use... a bunch of orcs can probably be substituted for any evil humanoids...

I think the best tactic could be to buy a couple of boosters first, for example of Giants of Legend to get huge figures. Then buy commons and uncommons from those online sellers mentioned before, staying away from rares (unless you really want some specific minis). For animals and dragons, look around in toy shops for non-D&D figures of the right size, and you'll save a lot of money.
