I would like to complain about that Moderator intervention, actually.

I have no desire to engage in a pointless dominance battle with Michael Tree. However, he was making inaccurate claims about mental illness in a thread intended to help someone who seems to be/have been quite depressed.

My last statements about Tree's inaccuracies were deleted by Henry Link. If such discussion is considered inappropriate by the moderators, they should have erased all posts of mine and Tree's, as they would then all be off-topic. I don't consider the activity on Henry's part to be either polite or responsible, and I'm disappointed in the quality of moderation the thread received.

At least Uz appears to be all right. Pretty much the only good thing about that thread.

You came into the thread, suggested he was a troll, proceeded to start an argument, and then continued after two moderators expressly told you to stop. Whether or not Michael's post has inaccuracies is irrelevant; when you're told by a mod to drop a subject, we expect you to please do so, even when you feel you aren't done yet.

Frankly, Henry wasn't trying to be polite. You ceded that perq when you ignored the moderators.

There's a time and a place for everything, Wrath, and that thread was not the place to get into a pissing match with Michael Tree or have a clinical discussion about mental illness. I would have thought that this would have been clear.

He hadn't responded, and he might have been a troll. It's good that he turned out not to be.

*One* moderator said that moving the debate to email was a good idea; as it happens, I only read that post after I'd responded again to Tree. The other moderator warning was the one I'm complaining about.

I wasn't told to do so, although it was certainly implied that the dialogue would be better in email.

I didn't.

Precisely, which is why Tree's claims about the clinical nature of mental illness were inappropriate. I see they remain in the thread, as are his responses to me.

Yes, Uzumaki might have been a troll. Might also have been suicidal. You supposedly have a psyche degree. Did you think that accusation of trollishness might be somehow constructive?

*One* moderator said that moving the debate to email was a good idea;

One moderator, and six of your fellow board members suggested, in various ways, that the discussion wan't a good idea. When presented with that weight of opinion against it, you should have listened.

I wasn't told to do so, although it was certainly implied that the dialogue would be better in email.

You weren't ordered to do so directly, but a moderator (Eridanis) clearly and explicitly agreed that it should be moved to e-mail. You did ignore that.

As P-cat said, Michael Tree's comments are not the issue. It's a bit of a "people in glass houses" situation here, Wrath.

Also note - fairness is nice, but sometimes to do the job well, the mods need to be unfair. This is not a free speech democracy. It's a benevolent dictatorship.

Lavishing attention on a person willing to pretend to be suicidal isn't any more so.

I hadn't read Eridanis' post when I posted again. Ergo, I didn't ignore it.

Michael Tree's comments were not removed. Mine were. The fact that his statements are not the issue is the problem.

Yeah, but no real harm is done by lavishing attention on a troll. Some great harm might be done by calling a critically depressed person a troll. Err on the side of caution, dude.

I hadn't read Eridanis' post when I posted again. Ergo, I didn't ignore it.

If you were engaging in such discussion, you should have been reading closely enough to see Eridanis' post and edit yourself after the fact. You chose not to. And even if you simply missed it by accident, you ignored a whole mess of the rest of us. All in all, you had plenty of warning.

I repeat - fairness is not guaranteed here. It never has been. Having mucked up enough to merit moderator action, you are not in a position to gripe. Also, remember that they have larger concerns than fairness, especially threads like that.

Your best bet is to let it rest for a few days, and then take it up in e-mail with the mods. Rather than telling them what you think is right, and how they are wrong, ask them the reasons for their actions. You may not agree with them in the end, but you will probably find they acted in a thoughtful and considered manner, rather than arbitrarily.

Right. Good advice.

Wrath, I said in the thread that if you have a problem, you should contact the moderator by email. Please do so if it's something you wish to pursue.
