Vacation: ITALY Rocks!

Buona Sera!

Running on fumes (nearly 23.5 hours since I last slept), but I wanted to drop by before I hit the sack to sing the praises of Italia ;)!

Just got back from 7 days on the Tuscany/Umbria border (just outside Cortona) and 1 day in Rome...and had an awesome time. The wife and I joined 3 other couples in renting a lovely Italian villa and touring Tuscany and its enviorns.

Cortona...Montelcino...Sant'Antimo...Montepulciano...Gubbio...Assisi...Perugia...Florence...Siena...Orvieto...etc

Beautiful countryside, friendly people, exquisite ruins (+churches, duomos, walled hill-towns), delicious food, outstanding red wines and the tang of ancient history in the very air combined for a truly memorable experience. Throw in walking the streets of Rome...past the Mausoleum of Augustus...the Forums of Augustus, Caesar, Nerva and Trajan...the Colosseum...the Arch of Constantine...the Palatine Hill...the Circus Maximus...and it became amazing :D!

Etruscan tombs...Greek pottery...Roman temples...the Crypt of St. Francis of Assisi...the David (a semi-religious experience, even for the non-religious) and other masterpieces of Renaissance art. I found myself stunned and amazed a dozen times a day during the journey. The very thought of walking in the footsteps of Ceasar, Augustus, Trajan, Constantine, the Medici, Leonardo di Vinci, Michelangelo, Donatello and countless others left me with chills on a routine basis. It was a history-lovers dream.

All I can say is, if you ever get a chance to go...do it! We are already planning a return trip

More later...

Glad you liked it. We spent 3000 years making it that way.

Zappo,

I sincerely appreciate all of your efforts ;)! It was the best vacation I have been on since my honeymoon in Ireland/Wales back in 1999.

Sounds Great, OO. Glad you had a good trip and made it back safely. I'm only a little jealous. :)

Nakia,

Thanks much! If you and the Mrs. can ever get over there, I highly recommend it!

I'm glad you had a good time. But remind me to kill you next time I see you.

Relster,

Sorry you are having (had) a bad day...thinking of my good fortune should cheer you up ;)!

The trip rocked but good. Unfortunately, we to sit in coach on the 9.75 hour flight back right in front of a plague carrier who was hacking up lung parts for the better half of the trip, so both the wife and I are now sick. I used frequent flier miles to upgrade to Envoy Class outbound, but was wait-listed on the return leg and we didn't get it...bleah .

However, my misfortune might be your gain, since I am getting something like 60,000 frequent flier miles redeposited in my account (putting me back over the 250k mark)...more than enough to get a certain someone from Raliegh to Indy in mid-August 2006 !

Hope tomorrow is better...

I toured Europe for 3 months for a study abroad program and my favorite places all are within the borders of Italy. San Gimignano was one of the top locations for me. I spent a lot of time in Rome and loved it. I really wish I would have more time to spend in Italy during my travels, but unfortanetly it was a educational trip and I had to met the rest of the group in Greece. But the best story I have of my trip deals with the lovely train station in Milan, as a buddy and I were forced to sleep there one night as we made our trip back towards Paris from Greece to catch our return flight home.

Man, it was only a year ago. Wish I were still there.

I was having a bad day but I should have used a smiley anyway. I'm not the sort of person to try and crap on somebody's good time just because I'm in a bad mood. I'm getting a handle on the bad stuff and having a better day today already. And I hope you're having a good day too.

Thanks for the uplifting message and give the kids a hug for me.
