Vacation: ITALY Rocks!

Make it so...

I need to take my wife to Italy. She has a degree in Art History and is chomping at the bit. We'll make it eventually...

fett527,

Do it! Seriously, if she has an art history degree...she will be in 7th heaven. We barely scratched the surface in our short visit, but almost every nook and cranny little church, gallery or museum is loaded with important works.

One suggestion I would make is to go a bit later in the year than we did, since the crowds at the major sites were still ridiculous (at least in Florence). Going in Oct before they change over to Daylight Savings time would be better, instead of mid-September. That and pre-book your tickets to the major sites. We ended up not getting into the Uffizi because the line was too long and we really wanted to hit the Galleria dell'Accademia to see the David.

If you prebook the tickets, you bypass all the crowds and go right to the head of the line...passing all the schlubs like us ;)!

A nice side bonus is that being in Italy is great for the love life...something about world classics and good wine :p!

I was having a bad day but I should have used a smiley anyway. I'm not the sort of person to try and crap on somebody's good time just because I'm in a bad mood. I'm getting a handle on the bad stuff and having a better day today already. And I hope you're having a good day too.

Thanks for the uplifting message and give the kids a hug for me.

Dude,

No problemo...you don't want to be within a 50-mile radius of me when I am having a bad day, since the "50-mile Zone of Pissed-off Old One" is a terrible thing. My day would be going better if I wasn't coughing up chunks of lung...I had to call out sick from work for the second day in a row...and I have a mountain of things to attend to.

Unfortunately, my father-in-law passed away 2.5 weeks ago...so I was unexpectedly out of work on family leave and then left for Italy...so I am approaching 3 weeks out of the office...I don't even want to see my inbox!

I'm sorry to hear about your father in law. I knew he was in very poor health but didn't know he'd passed. My condolences to you guys.

and I know she'd be in heaven for certain. We tried once already, we booked a trip with Perillo 6 years ago. Unfortunately I got laid off and we couldn't follow through. Life has just gotten in the way since then. Believe me all the stories she was told from her instructors left her drooling to get there. We'll do it, just not sure when. Got a 16 month old and we plan to have another child.

Ahhh....

The perfect plan...dump the 16-month old off with the grandparents, tour Italy and work on #2 at the same time ;) :D :p!

I know what you mean about life getting in the way...it took us a year to plan this trip, get childcare coverage for our 2 little ones (2.75 years and 9 months) and line up all the odds and ends. One thing I will say is do it while you are young(ish). A lot of people say "I will do that when I retire"...but some of those retired people were having a tough time physically with things like the Florence Duomo's Dome tour (just shy of 500 steps up). In fact, the Florentine authorities keep about a dozen ambulances on stand-by near the Duomo...just in case.
