One of my cousins is a concert pianist, and he played 2 concerts in Sighisoara this past summer. This story was the first thing he told me about when relating his travels - "they want to build a Dracula theme park!" - and it's a shame, because it's a beautiful little town, from the pictures he showed me. Saying that it's unpopular is a gross understatement, but the peole there are so used to the way the communist regime always had its way that there are mental blocks towards fighting something like this.

I just had to reply becuase I found it so unlikely that I would actually have access to first-hand information on something going on in Romania...

OK, a mock torture chamber is no worse than what you might see at a decent wax museum. But this part:
Glossy Tourism Ministry brochures advertise workshops for sharpening teeth into fangs at the park
gave me the creeps. Shades of the Hessian from Sleepy Hollow....

Major ack there, folks. I have been to the town twice, and it is a wonderful example of Transylvanian Saxon city-building, from the city hall to the clock tower. Of course, now that the Saxons are gone, some people feel free to kill their legacy as well. To put it bluntly: a theme park doesn't belong there. Why not put it in Bucharest (which was completely destroyed under Ceaucescu and his thugs) or somewhere else where it does no harm???
