Variable casting stats

I have a crazy idea. What if there was an optional rule that allowed spellcasters to choose their casting ability? Thus is somebody wanted a sorcerer, they could be a wizard with the Charismatic Casting ability. A cloistered cleric? Take Intelligent Casting. Perhaps different abilities can give different bonuses, like intelligence for casting allows for a spellbook or prayerbook. No need for much of the class bloat as say a sorcerer could just be a subclass of wizard. Good idea or am I smoking it?

This worked for me with 6 months of use of the godling class by 'SuperGenius Games. Essentially every player chose their own power based ability for magic.

I think this would be a positive step.

I also have done and would like to see done a rule where casters are dependent on multiple ability scores (one for spells/day, one for DCs), which makes things even more interesting (and balanced).
