Thinking of a monster variant. Was most probably created by a wizard or some ancient extinct race to protect a lair or the like. Basically think gorgon, with golden hide and it breathes a yellow gas that can turn organic creatures to gold? Is this too powerful? What should be the CR on such a creature?

So you want to change the gorgon from dusky metallic scales to golden hide? No CR increase, unless you decide to increase natural armor by a significant amount.

You want to change the breath weapon (pictured as green gas) that petrifies to a yellow gas that aurifies (no, I'm not sure that's a real word)? I don't think that's a CR increase either, unless there has to be a custom spell to turn them back, since stone to flesh wouldn't work in that case. I suppose the CR increase would vary depending on just how rare the cure is.

What might change the CR is if you want to make the gorgon able to breathe this gas more than once every 1d4 rounds but not more than 5 times per day.

Oh, and up the treasure. Of course, then there's the quandry of selling the other unfortunates, attempting to cure them, or just melting them down to make coins....

Other than that, I've got nothing.

I know that my group would be delighted to encounter one of these. Within seconds of seeing it in action, everyone would be furiously brainstorming ideas on how to capture it and profit from the unfortunates on whom we unleashed it. Of course, the game would grind to a screeching halt as everyone started flipping through every d20 book within reach looking for variant rules and loopholes to ensure a safe capture for the next 45 minutes. Hmm...now that I think about it, I hope we don't find one.

I would include this varient, and it would be a trap left by a very nasty god/fiend. Go ahead, try to make a profit with it, I dare you.
