Variant Magic System??

After spending 10 minutes or so during one of my last combats this weekend looking up spells in the PHB, I am now searching for a variant magic system. I'm looking for something without set spells, but rather where spells can be made up on the fly, the DM sets the appropriate DC based on the power of the spell and what it does and then the caster makes a caster level check to see if he/she casts it successfully. Does anything like this exist already? Please tell me I don't have to make this up on my own! :confused:

I posted an identical question a while back and, yeah, that system is pretty much exactly what you're talking about. Unfortunately, it's also very complicated and hard to explain.
 

On the good side, there is pretty solid support over in the Publishers Forum courtesy of both the author and a number of us'n regulars that love the system.

There is also Elements of Magic: Mythic Earth {EoM:ME} that is a skill based version, but is more slanted towards the D20 Modern..

And after Ranger Wickett wraps up War of the Burning Sky he has plans for doing a new EoM based on what was learned by EoM:ME and EoM:R
