I'm trying to make some homebrew martial art rules for a campaign setting that I've created and will be running a game in.....Character's will probably be all human...as its more a real world fantasy martial arts game....but I'm thinking of replacing Character Races with Martial Art styles...each style would give ability bonuses...special abilities...and have a favored class kinda like races.....all characters would be able to fight unarmed like a monk....so i'll end up dropping the monk class.....need some opinions and or help with concept....

( I've played around with Ken Hood's martial artist class and martial arts system....I want to try creating something else though.)

I don't know the names of the different animals, but there's animal names for different styles. Like the Crane, Viper (I think, some kind of snake), and tiger, etc., if that's what you mean...

Let me be the first to not recommend Ken Hood's martial arts system. It grossly inflates the power of skill points, which is not a neat fit with a standard campaign.

Are you referring to martial art styles in the fashion of the OA? I am working on some martial arts, but I am a convert to the Vrylakos school of fighting styles, i.e., fighting styles are prestige classes. (More completely, they are feat chains that can lead you into prestige classes.) I am not a big fan of the OA method.

But think about it, really. I recall in martial arts flicks of my youth, oft times the central character is a student with some martial arts knowledge who has to pass a series of tests put forth be an ancient master of the martial arts to become one of the select elite who can learn the art. Sound just like a prestige class to me.

Whoa, this is the first time I've ever heard of "Dragonfist".

Is that already out? Or about to come out? If so, anybody know when?

-thanks

It's been out for some time. It predates 3e, and is available for free on the WotC website. It is actually based off of 2e with some tweaks, and some people point to it as having inspirational elements that were led to 3e (I'm not so sure, but there you go.) It is really sort of neat.
