How is Magic Missile versatile?

It works on any enemy, period. Well, except spell resistance. I guess I should have said Acid Arrow.

I've always found Tenser's Floating Disc useful.

Mount.

A horse is way better than pretty much any of the level 1 summoned monsters, and it lasts for hours to boot. You can ride it, send it into (ineffective) combat, send it to block a door, load it up with loot, sell it, eat it, offer it as a sacrifice to hungry creatures, the list does on. Not all of these things are particularly scrupulous, but they are available as options.
