[VERY OT]The future of Seasame St.??

I shared this sad news with my players this evening while we were playing and I got a reaction of total dismay from them. None of us can believe this...kids should be challenged, not reduced to drooling idiots by these kids' shows today...

On a more positive side note, our group's newest player just got introduced tonight...and she loves D&D.... God Bless D&D! (Our other female player is absolutely exstatic that we have another female in the group, LOL) It's great having a new player who is totally into fantasy, especially Lord of the Rings--she picks up very quickly!

I agree Sesame Street is not the wonder it once was. I think the "elmofication" of Childrens Television Workshop has more to do with there need to draw funding than actually educating children. They need to sell their dolls in order to pay for the show, and Kermit the Frog, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Grover, Bert and Ernie, and Oscar the Grouch just aren't moving off the shelves the way they used to.

I liked the old set up of sesame street. Sure the main story was broken up, but there was great stuff with puppets in between it. The two-headed monster, Grover the waiter, Guy Smiley the gameshow host, Super Grover, Bert & Ernie, The Count, etc.

Hopefully they will eventually show reruns of the older shows. And although I would hate to see Gordon, Maria, and all the creative people on that show go out of work, maybe they should. Come on it is not like the 3 year old is going to know that the episode he is watching was shown 10 years ago.

They have actually done this with a very popular childrens show here in Canada called Mr. Dressup. When the shows star finally retired he just ended the show the way he always did saying "see you next time and bye bye, from me Mr. Dressup." They have been repeating the 20 or so years worth of episodes ever since.

Oh, and by the way Eversoar the Swedish Chef is from the Muppet Show.

I sure wish that they would rerun that.

By the way, did Caroll Spinney leave the show? Big bird doesn't sound like the right voice anymore. If so, when did that happen? I'm probably just imagining it.

I don't think he is dead. I saw a TV show profiling him a month or so ago. The interview and the clips they showed looked fairly recent.

Let's get this VERY OT thread a little more on topic:

All the kids, grown ups and bunch of the muppets are outside near Oscar the Grouch's garbage can. Grover, and Elmo come running up.

Elmo: Hello everybody. Guess what we found at the book store. A new game!

Everybody: A new game!

Grover: Yes, you get to use your imagination. Its like a fairy tale but you get to play a part in it.

Kermit: What is it? A play?

Elmo: Noooooo...

Cookie Monster: Is it a Cookie Game?

Elmo: Nooooo.

Kermit: Then what is it?

Grover: It's Dungeons & Dragons!

CUT TO Burt and Ernie.

Ernie: Hello kids. Can you guess what the letter of the day is?
Come'on Burt. Guess what the letter is.

Burt: No.

Ernie: It's the letter D ! YAAAAAYYYYY!!!

( A big "D" appears above Ernie's head)

Ernie: Hey Burt! Can you guess a word that begins with "D"?

Burt: Uh...Dungeons...

Ernie: ....AND DRAGONS! YAAAAAYYYY!!!

Burt: Somebody get me a +1 Mace of....DISRUPTION!

Ernie: ANOTHER "D" WORD! YAAAAAYYY!!!

Burt: OH DEAR!

CUT TO Kermit, Elmo, Grover and Oscar the Grouch sitting around a table. Kermit is behind a DM's Screen.

Elmo (In a tickle-me-Elmo laugh): Ha ha ha ha...Ha ha ha ha I killed an orc!

Kermit (To Grover): Its your attack! Roll D20!

Grover (After rolling): A Natural 20! Do I roll damage?

Kermit: No, you did a critical threat! Roll again...

Oscar: Okay...while he's doing that I'll pick pocket Elmo's character.

Kermit: You can't do that. I'm the Dungeon Master and I say so!

Oscar (Picks up a fist full of dice): Ya wanna stop me?

Kermit (looking into camera): Gulp!

CUT TO closing credits:

Elmo: Seasame Street has been brought to you by the letter "D" and the number 20...

LOL! I should watch Sesame street every once in a while... I think the Dutch version will stay the same, it's on national public television. Our big bird is blue though... I still haven't figured out why our BB is blue. Oh and his name is "Pino" (PEE-NO). Perhaps he turns blue from keeping it in...
