Volcano or Fire Giant Modules?

Silver Moon

Adventurer
So last night my weekly gaming group is playing night four of the classic "Into the Fire" module from Dungeon Magazine issue #1. They hit the crossroads with the six fire giants and defeat them. Then, instead of continuing on the mission they decide to track the giants' tracks back to the lair.

The module indicates that the giants only recently arrived at that location, attracted by the heat of an active volcano near the crossroads. So I make their original home the only other active volcano on the map.

I figure when the party realizes that the destination is over 20 miles away without a road they'll turn back. But they don't, determined to go fight more giants rather than continue with the original mission. That's where we ended.

I'm inclined to let them. The module provides almost no information about the other volcano. Not wanting to re-invent the wheel, I was wondering if anyone knew of any other modules that used either Fire Giants or an active volcano that I could borrow from? (Note - I have a collection of nearly every issue of Dungeon Magazine, most Dragon Magazines,as well as most 1st and 2nd Edition TSR modules, so probably have something but am looking to save the time of having to thumb through every one to check.)

I hate to be so obvious, but I assume you considered G3 Hall of the Fire Giant King?

Strange. This question seems strangely familiar....

Yeah, that's what I was going to say!

Or that's what I did say.

I think.

Deja-vu? Time travel? Or have I been dreaming up questions again in my sleep? :\

That's one of the few old modules that I don't have a copy of (plus three of my players have also played it before).

I don't know anything about the module you were playing, but maybe this would be a good chance to put a spin on it.

Maybe the fire giants have a problem, and will be willing to seek help from adventurers.

I mean, rather than have them go romp through some fire giant lair, slaying every man, woman and child, give the place a purpose. Maybe a greater evil is invading their home. Maybe the fire giants have been enslaved, and the ones the PCs killed had escaped somehow. Maybe if they interract with another fire giant that giant tells the PC "we've sent others to find a safer place to live, but they haven't come back yet!" Make them feel guilty for killing those other fire giants, unless they attacked first, I suppose.

I guess what I'm saying is to look beyond the creature stats, and give the things a story, and a purpose. It will make the world seem much more alive.

Beyond All Reason by Fiery Dragon. Though it has some unusual circumstances surrounding it...

I believe you can buy it as a PDF now (check Fiery Dragon's website). I own the print copy and have integrated sections of it into various adventures. It's an interesting adventure, well written, and with a nice twist, plus there is plenty of material for at least several adventures. I believe it's 3.0 but there probably isn't much if anything that would need serious conversion to play, if you're running 3.5.

What about creating 'Return to the lair of the fire giant king' from the original G3? The new King can be Snurreson from the module Lord of the Iron Fortress.

That way you get an easily customizable dungeon and a link to another good module.
