Ok, first you get a DR 5/magic, and then you get an improvement of DR 5/evil.

Is this really an improvement? It looks more like a lateral move to me. Or do you keep the magic DR as well as the evil DR?

Or, as usual, am I missing something about DR vs. Evil.

No, it's an improvement. Once the DR 5/evil is added, mere magic weapons no longer penetrate the DR. A weapon would need to be both magic and evil to ignore the DR.

If you have multiple DRs, you apply the single most effective DR against any given attack. For instance, if you have:
DR 5/lawful,
DR 10/adamantine, and
DR 15/evil,

then an evil (but not adamantine or lawful) weapon has its damage against you reduced by 10, from the DR 10/adamantine. The DR 5/lawful just sits there in the background, not really doing anything. If an evil adamantine (but not lawful) weapon hit you, its damage would be reduced by 5.

Side note, creatures that already have DR X/silver or DR X/iron really like being able to cast Stoneskin.
