Vow of Poverty/Magnificent Mansion

Should a spellcaster with the Vow of Poverty feat be allowed to cast Mord's Magnificent Mansion and other such spells that allow a 'free' life of virtual luxury? Would such a character loose his/her VoP benefits for doing such things?

Of course....the character shouldn't want to do such a thing as it would violate a vow that they have taken....

Why do people always try to find loopholes for Vow of Poverty? Are its benefits not good enough???

I'm not trying to find loopholes. I'm trying to plug them up! I don't think a character with VoP should be able to do such things without loosing his VoP abilities. But the way VoP is worded in Exalted Deeds, I wasn't sure this was the case, so I thought I'd ask.

2. How does the caster provide the following expensive foci?

Focus: A miniature portal carved from ivory, a small piece of polished marble, and a tiny silver spoon (each item worth 5 gp).

I say if the character is trying ton live according to his vows, if he truly believes in them, he would not even want the luxuries.

And if he's taken the vow for the power and is looking for loopholes, then it should be stripped from him anyway.

I don't VoP in front of me, but if you can manage the meager material components (three 5 gp items), then there is no reason you can't cast the spell. I see no problem with casters with VoP casting this spell; it's basically false luxury. You have the ability to create this fantasy mansion, but only for a short time (short time when compared to a permanent structure) and it disappears after a time.

Although, it does somewhat lead someone to question the character's vow. I would allow them to cast it, but it probably is more appropriate as a scroll...a sort of escapist thing.

I had the same question. I thought someone with VoP could use certain mundane items. I wasn't sure if 15 gp worth of stuff violated that. If it does, then you are right.

The VoP character doesn't have to be the wizard, it could be a fighter.

When the wizard casts the spell, will the VoP character enter, or sleep outside by himself?

Whoops - I knew a material component wasn't needed, but forgot about the Focus. Thanks for pointing that out.

As per the BoED, you can substitute 1 xp per 5 gp value of material components. The book however, does not seem to mention owning a spellbook.

So a sorc could, as per the book, cast the spell by sacrificing 3 xp. As to wether or not the spell would violate the vow; the spell states the mansion can have any floor plan you desire. How about a shack? And the food can be given to companions.
