VTT large-scale units

I'm looking at a larger-scale fantasy action in a few weeks, and I need a way to depict formed units. I could use a single token, but that lacks dramatic flair. I have modern markers (below), but my google-fu has failed me, and I can't find anything similar for a fantasy setting.

Any recommendations?

I just do my own by building units with single tokens inside a VTT (maptool) and just take a snap and use it as a whole token (you can take the snap without the grid not like my sample below)

It might be better to open the token images in an image editor, arrange them, and then save it with a transparent background. Taking a screenshot of the tokens from a VTT will capture the background terrain as part of the unit's token as well.

How comfortable are you with image editing, like Photoshop, GIMP, or Paint.NET?

Edited to add:
I was able to whip this up in just a few minutes using Paint.NET and a token from Forgotten Adventures:

How dynamic do you need it? Do you need the formed unit to show lost of individuals in that unit or does the formed unit have single stat block? If a single stat block, follow the advice above and create a token that shows multiple troops. A variety of ways to do this, but it has already been discussed on top.

In Foundry, there are modules that allow you to have multiple images for the same token and you can "flip" through the images as the unit takes damage. Personally, that's too fiddly for me and I'm not sure if Roll20 overs anything similar.

The token Rab created was perfect; in fact, I'm going to use it. Now I'm trying to reverse engineer it with another token, and I'm done. Its not a large engagement.
