Ah, but it's not just a goldfish, it has become something more. It is now the object of a gestalt of affection. It became a unifying factor for people whose closest other unifying factor was that they all spent time in a certain diner on a regular basis. It has also become the object of a gestalt of curiosity here on ENWorld. it has been translated, from mere $1.98 goldfish to the stuff of legends and dreams. It is a microcosm of the human experience, people want to see the downtrodden triumph because they see themselves as the downtrodden. That is why we want to believe that people can really overcome any odds, even if the facts don't agree. We want to believe that dead people really talk to that charlatan John Edwards, even though we know that he's just a con man; because we are all grimly aware of the spectre of death and that final oppression of the grave, and we all want to believe that we can somehow triumph over those ultimate odds.

Also, goldfish are cute. not like lobsters... bleh....

People are wierd indeed. On fanfiction.net, aside from 64000 pieces of Dragonball fanfiction (you think I'm joking...), I was able to turn up no less than 27 pieces of Diary of Anne Frank fanfiction.

we have to remember that this goldfish is 8 inches long. I would hesitate to get rid of such a large, unflushable, ancient fish. So, i guess the question to ask isn't, "are you willing to spend 2 bucks on a new goldfish?" but rather, "are you willing to spend 17 years of your life keeping such a fish alive (which is admittedly harder than it appears, just ask my brother who went through Knuckles I through Knuckles III, and has since deemed the name unlucky) until it is just as big." Oh well, i wonder what it tastes like, fillet of goldfish, yummm.....
