Wake up rule?

Is there a rule to see when a person wakes up?

For instance. A thief is sneaking around a sleeping character and fails a move silently check. The thief produces some sound, but there isn't anyone actually listening.

How would you resolve this?

Other situations where this has come up have been the party is camping out and the person on guard wakes up only one of the other party members before they are jumped. How should I determine if the rest of the party members wakes up?

Trying to move silently is usually resolved as an opposed roll between the moving guy's Move Silently skill, and the Listen skill of anyone who can hear him. It would be reasonable to assume that it's practically impossible for a sleeping person to hear things, so assign a -20 penalty on the Listen check. An untrained Listen check is a Wisdom check.

If there's a fight going on, that's a DC -10 Listen check (see the DMG, p.93). The -20 penalty on the roll makes that effectively DC 10. Roll each round until the person wakes up, or until they're kicked awake (a standard action, which automatically succeeds).

I agree with Hong.

What my guys do is this:

If a spellcaster, they always seem to memorize create water. When/if they need to wake people up they just cast it. It is liking pouring buckets of water on the characters.
