I think Orchid has a more jaded view of GenCon.
Try this on for size:
Order your badge, and have it shipped. In the latter case, the line is fairly short, so it's not a big deal.
Do not buy any generic tickets, and do not buy event tickets at the Con. If there is an event that you see that's really really neat, chances are 800 other people thought so too, and it filled up a LOOONG time ago.
Instead, just chill out, and watch all the suckers in the mile-long line. (well, Thursday won't have a horrendous line, but it'll be there on Saturday).
Tour the vendor hall like a zombie, and spend lots of hard-earned money.
Then, when you're ready to game, head to the pick-up games area (many ENWorlders will be there this year running pick-up games, so stop by the ENPublishing booth to find people that are going to be gaming). Pick-up games cost nothing to play, and run all the time. You might have to wait 30 minutes or so before one starts. Or run your own.
Find some seminars if you like, and go to them. I've never been to a seminar that filled up, and needed my ticket yet. There's always plenty of room, and even if they collect tickets, they won't kick you out if you don't have one.
That's it! Much less stress, and a lot less waiting in line. If you really do want generic tickets, get them after the line has died down. They never run out of generic tickets!
