I just watched the recent BBC "Jane Eyre." I think the 'illithid in the attic' could go very nicely into that. Maybe let the con artist get into bed of a noble woman (chinless, big skull, thinning hair but very rich) whose husband/cousin is locked in the attic, who can sense his wife's pleasure and is very jealous =

I've got a noble family who the 'no dark secret' thing will work with. Of course for it to really work eventually I have to let the players know that family they have been watching with growing paranoia and suspicion are just what they seem: shameless social climbers.
