I'm in the beginning stages of designing a 3.5 campaign set in Forgotten Realms. I'm open to any and all suggestions on character ideas, adventure ideas, etc.
It pretty much follows the history that's been laid out in the FR book. In case any of you aren't familiar with it, I'll give you a quick run-down of the relevant parts.
It's going to start out in the Moonshae Isles. These are a group of islands that are inhabited by two different groups of people -- the Ffolk to the south and the Northlanders from the (you guessed it) north. They used to not get along very well, but when the campaign starts, both groups of people live in relative harmony under the rule of the High Queen Alicia Kendrick. Now, just about their only real threat comes in the form of pirates from an island chain to the south.
In the Dragon Annual 2000, there was a prestige class called the Royal Herald. Basically, the Royal Heralds are a bunch of secret operatives in service of a monarch.
One of the PC's (the only one who's actually made it through the character creation process so far) will be in training for the Royal Heralds in service of the High Queen of the Moonshaes. Most Heralds operate internally -- investigating uprisings, murders, pirate attacks, etc. Their actions are always kept secret from the general public. The Queen likes to keep the "bad stuff" out of the public eye. Plus, sometimes the Heralds are charged with missions that are of the not-so-nice kind.
A select few Heralds, however, are charged with missions abroad. These guys are kinda like Rambo. They're sent out to do a specific deed, often the ones of the not-so-nice type, they check in regularly to the Lord Chamberlain, who controls the Heralds, and if they're captured or killed, the Queen denies any involvment in their actions.
The PC's father is one of these Heralds. He was sent abroad (the PC doesn't know where) months before the game starts, leaving the PC to his training. One day, the Lord Chamberlain (who always had a soft spot for the PC) approaches the PC in private. He tells the PC that strictly speaking, he shouldn't be telling him this, but that they have lost contact with his father. He then goes on to basically tell the PC that he's powerless to send another Herald to go looking for him, but he would look the other way if the PC wanted to go looking for his father. He gives the PC a map.
From there, I'm not really sure where I want to take the campaign. There are a lot of things I could do, but first, I need to introduce the other characters (I'll probably have two more, but I'm not sure of their classes). I'd LIKE to introduce them before this character leaves the Moonshaes. Maybe have a few adventures just getting them to a boat, but I'm afraid I'll have to just do the time warp thing and rocket this character to the place where his father was dispatched to, then introduce the other characters there. The other players are pretty open to suggestion when it comes to selecting characters, so I may be able to custom-make my group.
Ideas? Comments?
