War of the Burning Sky monster suggestions

I think it would be fun to have a little corner blurb saying: "Now with a challenge from En Critters 5!"

I like: Ashen Drakes CR5 - Critters 6

LN Small Dragons - they could be a real source of information for the mage that bribed them for recent events. At that CR you could have a mated pair and some nice role play possibilities.

Boneswirls would be a no brainer too.

I'm sorry it's taking so long for a response. Between connectivity problems and real life, I got a bit behind. I'll try to look over some of the OGL sources today.

For adventure 9, the Tzorda from Denizens of Avadnu would be fun. Others for this one could include the Void Monster from Monster Geographica: Underground, and the shaggy demodand from Tome of Horrors.

More to come.

A short selection from the physical books I have at the ready (I may delve through my PDFs and maybe other books later):

Adventure 6 has lots of corporeal flaming undead, and will showcase the blood-animated skeleton of a gold dragon. Party level 11.
Tome of Horrors II has
  • Cinder Ghoul (Large Undead, CE, CR 7, can take smoke form and can burn the inner organs of a victim)
  • Fire Phantom (Medium Extraplanar Undead, CE, CR 5, can hurl small fire attacks and immolate itself; can't be turned).
Creature Collection II (3.0 source) has the Burned Ones (Medium Undead, no fire subtype, CE, CR 4 (may be higher in reality); also can immolate themselves). Creature Collection III has the Ashcloud (Large Undead, NE, CR 7, can engulf, smother and take cloud form)

Adventure 7 has incorporeal undead, like a ghost dire wolf pack, as well as some demons that are complicated and really tied to the plot. Party level 13.
Chances are that any OGL monster book has one and/or the other of those types. :heh:
To not quite leave this empty, the Slaughterwar Master is not incorporeal, but may fit in somewhere (not necessarily this adventure.

Adventure 8 has winter-themed foes, and an underground fortress which I want to have be guarded by things other than just soldiers. Party level 15.
Not quite so easy to find many cold guys of appropriate CRs here, but most books have low-CR creatures that may fit the winter theme. If you're willing to go up to CR 18, Tome of Horrors II has the slorath, a Gargantuan serpent with a paralyzing gaze. CC Revised has the huror, a Huge CR 16 bear that is the center of a blizzard. CCII has the Tundra Lord, a mammoth that can deafen its foes and cause an earthquake spell, CR 9 (might need a few more HD, as written it has fewer than an elephant).
CCIII has
  • Icewrack dragon, CR 12.
  • Windigo, incorporeal outsider that can possess others, which even if driven out can turn the victim into a windigo as well.
Strange Lands - Lost Tribes of the Scarred Lands has a whole section of monsters for a frozen continent. (filling this in later)

Adventure 9 is crazygonuts. If you have any ideas for cool monsters, throw them this way. Party level 17.
Shade, do you think there'd be room for the Drenkari here?

Hmmm, not to toot my own horn too much, but I've converted the mantidrake over here. Other than the air theme, it's about the right CR (well, by my guesstimate) for adventure 5, and it fits the hybrid-monster schtick.

Edit: And it's a conversion, fully OGC.

Freyar, how would you like me to credit you, and is there an OGC section 15 declaration we need to include for this?

I'm sorry I haven't added as much as I'd like. A surprise project with a short deadline fell into BOZ and my laps, so we got pretty busy.

Wow, a credit for little-ole me? :o Thanks!

I haven't actually done the OGL for this yet, since I am planning to do a few more conversions from the same source, but here goes.

The mantidrake is from Cult of the Dragon, c1998 WOTC, lead design Dale Donovan.
Conversion c2007 Andrew Frey

I honestly don't know if there is an earlier source for this monster, but someone on these boards (Echohawk comes to mind) would know. I'll see if I can find out, too.

You called? :)

The mantidrake first appeared in Dragon #170, p20 in an article called "Dragon hybrids, crossbreeds, mixtures, and more" by Gregory W. Detwiler.

Okay, so it currently has no OGL section 15 requirements? So I'll put in a special thanks, and we'll be cool (anyway, I'm revising your version a bit to better fit the scene I have in mind).
