This is probably the same Graeme Davis who has written more than few RPG titles, including Tales of Freeport, Clanbook: Assamite, GURPS Vikings, and so on. Good for him. Too bad he's not really a "new" author, meaning I'd have liked to see someone get a "big break" here.

Has he written any novels, though? This could be his big break into something other than RPG work...

Not to take anything away from Mr. Davis (I own at least five of the books he's written, actually), but here's the text from the WOTC site:

This is your chance to bring your talents to our attention, as we are known as a publisher that works with talented, unpublished authors. We've had the pleasure of launching a number of writing careers, and we would like to launch some more.
So what does "published" mean? Just fiction? Or at all? Could you argue that RPGs ARE fiction? Or that RPG game fiction counts too? And what counts as a a "launched" career?

Who knows. Certainly, WOTC was not bound to take a new author, they just encouraged "unpublished" authors to submit, which is still really cool.

Conversely, there's a quote in Eberron that states on page 7 regarding the world submission contest:
It's worth noting that none of the three finalists had any professional game design credentials when they submitted their proposals.

And yet, the Pen & Paper database disagrees: http://www.pen-paper.net/rpgdb.php?op=showcreator&creatorid=2961

So I suppose the notion of "unpublished" and "professional" is rather flexible in this context.

Oh well, there's always the other novel submission contest...

...If R.A. Salvatore wins that contest I'm giving up. :)

just as a quick aside - YESTERDAY I got the official "thanks, but no thanks" rejection letter back in my SASE.

at least this one came home - the one I sent them for Maiden of Pain never returned...

:(

so it goes.
