Warden?

There'll be a mad dwarf hermit NPC* in the next game I'm GMing. Originally, he was to be some monster reskinned, but the Daily power where you become a frost monster thing fit his MO too well for him to be anything but a Warden. If I remember, I might post about how he plays out, whenever we play again.

*I had to make some educated guesses about NPC Wardens, but the same has been true about NPC Artificers, Barbarians and Swordmages before the FRPG came out. They all worked out okay, more or less.

Very heavy controller vibe during play.
Never had to drop a daily during the session.
At-will slow effect pretty nasty.
Thunder-Ram is my favorite evocation.

One of the players in my campaign created a Warden for a side 1st level game (the main characters in the campaign are level 10).

The Warden was killed 2 rounds into his first combat.

However, this was because:

1) The player of the Warden paid no attention to defense, possibly thinking that his extra hitpoints and surges made him invincible.

2) The dice seriously hated this character. 2 critical hits in a row from bloodied goblin skullcleavers, among other unfortunate events.

So, I don't really have any data to add to this discussion, except to say that the near-instant gacking of the toughest character class in the game was freakin' hilarious.

I seemed like I had the opposite situation, the rest of the party pretty much dealt with their own opponants and let the warden get surrounded.

Just sorta, he'll be fine. He was, but I think if they had worked together more they could have gotten deeper in before resting.

Yup, only one. Ever.

Could you state what you think is over-powered about it? I've seen a few people post general "It's overpowered" posts, but they rarely follow up with examples. I think they're decidedly underpowered, but I'll have to see their execution in a game and their final wording in PHB2.

Am I the only one to think that the Warden is incredibly overpowered?

I don't know if it's "incredibly" overpowered, but at least on paper it does look like the power creep is there.

Compared to a fighter it has higher base hp, more hp per level, more surges, can make saves at the beginning of it's turn rather than at the end, and can even use their Con modifier for AC if you want.
