Warforged and Gender

So I was looking at Races of Eberron today. It mentions that most warforged adopt a human gender. Later, it describes under character creation that choosing a gender is mandatory... and permanent.

Why? ... and why?

Is there some backstory I'm missing, or is this just a case of unnecessary anthropomorphism?

My personal view is that Races of Eberron introduced some unnecessary and unwarranted changes from the original concepts presented in the Eberron campaign book - and this was one of them.

Warforged IMC are produced genderless, and some of them choose to experiment with affecting a particular gender but basically they all remain genderless.
