would a warforged monk need to take the unarmored body feat at first level to be able to use his unique abilities (aka flurry, move speed, ect)? or can he fuction just fine with his "natural" armor?

A warforged's composite plating has no effect on a monk's class abilities, unless he also takes a feat such as Adamantine Body, Mithral Body, etc.

Peter's got it right.
Note that the same thing applies to druid abilities, and anything else that depends on armor type. A warforged with no Body feats is considered to be wearing no armor.
